HGSC 2016 Scholarship Winners

The Hamilton Girls Soccer Club honored three graduating high school seniors with the presentation of the Geri Kurlander Memorial Scholarships and also announced three new scholarships on August 17.

Paige Mezaros of Steinert; Brenna Darvas of Steinert and Concetta Scordato of Hamilton West were all presented with certificates and $500 check from the club.

Mezaros, who will attend McDaniel College in Maryland, was a four-year letter winner in soccer and lacrosse at Steinert. She is Steinert’s all-time leading scorer in lacrosse. She also was a trainer for the Hamilton Girls Soccer Club’s Micro Division for three years.

Darvas lettered for three years in soccer at Steinert and will play club soccer at the College of New Jersey. She played for the club’s Wildcat travel teams as well as recreation soccer. She served as a referee in all the club’s recreation divisions. She will continue to referee while attending college.

Scordato played varsity soccer at Hamilton West and also played travel soccer as well as recreation soccer. She was also a referee for the club. She will continue to referee while attending college.

The scholarships are based on academic, soccer participation, community service and service to the club.

“We are proud of the accomplishments of these young women and are glad that their experiences in our club as a player, a referee and a coach helped shape them in some small way,” said Tom Slater, Hamilton Girls Soccer Club president.

The Hamilton Girls Soccer Club also made presentations as part of the third annual Kickin’ Cancer Fundraiser Tournament.

The Club raised $12,000 this year and presented $5000 to the New Jersey Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

In addition, $5000 was presented to the family of Tom Sprague, a father of Abby Sprague of the 2002 Hamilton Wildcats. He passed away this past spring. The club dedicated this year’s tournament to Mr. Sprague.

The club also announced that it will grant three additional scholarships for Hamilton players who are graduating high school and attending college.

The scholarships will be given in the names of three Hamilton soccer fathers who passed away from cancer while their daughters were playing for the club.

Beginning next year, the club will add three scholarships: The Tom Sprague Scholarship, the Mitch Rende Memorial Scholarship and the Ken Dunn Memorial Scholarship.

Mitch Rende’s daughter Nicole plays for the Hamilton’s NJ Rush Grey 2002 team and was recently part of a team that won the NPL National Championship. He passed away shortly before the first Kickin’ Cancer Tournament in 2015.

Ken Dunn’s daughter Kelly was a member of the 1999 Hamilton Wildcats --- one of the club’s original teams. He passed away eight years ago during the soccer season.

The three new scholarships will be presented next spring along with the three Geri Kurlander Scholarships. Geri Kurlander was one of the original co-founders of the Hamilton Girls Soccer League.
